Balmoral Red Granite: complete guide
Overview
Balmoral Red is a Finnish granite with a bold, uniform red. It is chosen when a warm, vivid colour is needed together with the durability of a stone suitable for exteriors.
History and origin
It is quarried in Finland and is one of the best-known Scandinavian red granites. For many years it has been used for monuments, memorial work, façade cladding and street furniture. The compactness of the material also makes it suitable for sculpture and engraving. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Appearance
The background is bright red, formed by red feldspars, greyish quartz and small dark micas evenly distributed. Variation between slabs is low, with slight differences in the intensity of the red. Polished, it becomes bright and saturated, while flamed it takes on a lighter, pinkish red.
Uses
It is used for façades, outdoor paving, steps, monuments, kerbs and worktops. Indoors it performs best where a strong accent of colour is wanted, such as counters or kitchen worktops. On large interior surfaces it can be very dominant.
Care and maintenance
Cleaning with water and a neutral detergent is enough. A water- and oil-repellent protector is recommended on kitchen worktops. Outdoors it requires no special treatment beyond normal cleaning.
